Is there a way to label the pins other than hover over the pin? Is there an upgrade required?

Yes, you can add a label to your map points (pins), but that functionality is included in the paid services.
On the add pin window enter the label's text in the textbox "Pin Label" and select to check box to make it "visible". Thanks
